Koh Samui is an island that is rich in resourses, one of those being fresh fruit. The markets here are laden with fresh produce and the trees are laden with fruits. As well as having an abundance of coconut trees the island has a vast amount of banana plants. Banana is the common name for the herbaceous plants of the genus Musa and for the fruit they produce. The banana is one of the oldest plants primarily cultivated for its fruit that is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium and is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, manganese and vitamin B. but the value of a banana does not stop there; it has many other uses aside from being part of a balanced diet.

bananas 2Bananas when liquidized with a small amount of water make an excellent treatment for damaged hair. By rubbing banana peel directly onto your teeth for two minutes a day you will be well on your way to having the perfect smile thanks to the skins teeth- whitening properties. Bananas can also be mashed up and used as an anti- ageing face mask. The peel alleviates the itch from insect bites and the flesh, rich in potassium, is said to help treat warts as well as aiding the healing process for cuts scrapes and bruises. Surprisingly, if you press banana peel onto a stubborn splinter the fruits natural enzymes will work to help get it out. Dried banana peel makes a fantastic mulch for new seedlings and plants and hanging a bunch of bananas in your garden will attract butterflies and birds. Bananas can be used to bring a shine back to leather and silver and if you burry some cut up banana peel 2 – 3 inches deep around a plant it will combat aphids. If your dog has a taste for the exotic, the humble banana makes a healthy treat and a frozen solid banana makes an extremely healthy alternative to soft serve ice cream. And, finally try adding a ripe banana to your roast. Banana leaves are commonly used in Asian countries wrapped around meat to make it more tender, some say that the banana itself also has this ability, so if you think your roast might turn tough, try softening it up by adding a peeled banana to your roasting pan!
