Half a tonne of dope seized in Nong Khai maybe headed for Australia

Drugs suppression authorities announced the seizure of more than 500 kilograms of compressed marijuana worth up to 8 million baht if it reached a foreign destination.
Shots were fired as the drugs were found in the back of an Isuzu pick-up but the driver managed to escape, Channel 3 reported.
Acting on a tip off that a large consignment of drugs was coming from a neighbouring country river police, peacekeepers and customs officials mobilized forces. They found a pick-up travelling near the Mekhong River along the Nong Khai to Phonphisai Road in the direction of the provincial capital.
They gave chase around 1am as it neared Nong Khai and shot out the rear right tyre that caused the driver to lose control and end up off the road. He managed to clamber out and escape into the night, however.
Under a canvas sheet in the back they found 522.5 kilos of compressed ganja worth four million baht locally. They suspect the drugs were heading south and then on to Australia or Malaysia where the dope would be worth twice the value in Thailand.
