A Ukrainian national was killed and 3 people were injured when a truck that delivers ice lost control on Thepkasattri Rd in Phuket this morning. The truck had crossed a median strip and rammed itself head-on into oncoming traffic. The ice truck then hit the Ukrainian woman on her motorbike and another truck.

Police got to the scene around 7:30am. They worked with Kusoldharm rescue workers to assist those at the scene. The 30 year old Ukranian woman, whose name was not provided, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the ice truck, 30 year old Theerawat Saehor, and a 20 year old passenger, Arun Klinsom, sustained minor injuries to their legs. The driver of the other truck, 27 year old Kitsadee Chueibuakaew complained of chest pains from his vehicle being hit head-on. The ice delivery truck was found resting on its side, on top of another car’s trunk. Another truck faced the wrong way with severe damage to the front and rear of the vehicle

First aid was administered to all of the victims. They injured, and the body of the Ukrainian woman, were taken to the Thalang Hospital. Theerawat tells police that it was raining while he tried to pass another vehicle, but he lost control of his truck and it cut across the median and hit the other vehicle as well as the Ukrainian woman who was riding a motorbike.

CCTV footage allegedly captured the truck speeding on a wet road that was forced to swerve to miss a truck that had just taken a U-turn. The Pattaya News says the CCTV footage shows that if the truck was driving slower, it would have had plenty of time to avoid the truck and wouldn’t have had to swerve.

“At this stage, police have not decided what charges the driver will face, as we have to wait for him and his passenger, and the driver of the other pickup truck driver, to be discharged from hospital first so we can question them”, says Lt Chanita Boonyanuwat of the Thalang Police.

Chanita adds that hospital staff will give Theerawat an alcohol test.
