Japan lifts travel advisory for Thailand, 35 other countries

Japan has lifted a travel advisory for Thailand, which had requested that citizens avoid non-essential travel to the kingdom. A similar advisory was lifted for 35 other countries, including the UK, Canada, Hong Kong and the US.

According to a Kyodo News report, Japan’s foreign ministry has downgraded Thailand and the other 35 nations from Level 2 to Level 1 on a 4-point scale of alert. Other Southeast Asian countries included in the downgrade are Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. Instead of avoiding non-essential travel, Japanese travellers are now requested to “stay fully alert” while visiting these locations.

The report goes on to say that 15 other countries or regions have been downgraded from Level 3, which tells citizens to avoid all travel to those areas, to Level 2. A press release from the foreign ministry says these include 7 countries in the Middle East and Africa, 6 European countries, and 2 in Latin America.

“On the whole, the world is seeing a downward trend in the number of new infection cases and deaths, and the risk of suffering severe symptoms and deaths has been receding.”

Japan now has 109 countries and regions at Level 2, including China, South Korea, and India, along with 27 other Asian nations. Also at Level 2 are 35 European countries, including France, Germany, and Italy. 41 countries remain unchanged at Level 3.
