Junta To Crack Down On Date-Rape Drugs

Thailand’s military junta is cracking down on date-rape drugs by regulating imports of the drug’s key ingredients, a spokesperson said.
The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) says it will amend the law to make importing volatile alkyl nitrite, a base substance of the drug, legal only with permission from authorities, said Cpt. Yongyuth Mailarp, an NCPO spokesperson.
“The measure is to set regulate and control this category of volatile substance, because it is a component of the drugs to intoxicate women,” Cpt. Yongyuth said.
According to Cpt. Yongyuth, NCPO chairman Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha is also concerned about the widespread practice of smoking shisha.
“Baragu contains tar and nicotine,” the spokesperson explained, using a Thai term for shisha.
The NCPO is looking into measures to regulate the substance, Cpt. Yongyuth said.
