Lion Air flight from Bangkok to Hat Yai canceled after passenger bomb joke

Yesterday a Lion Air flight from Don Mueang to Hat Yai Airport was cancelled after a passenger made a joke about a bomb. The 23 year old man joking told a flight attendant the bag he was about to put in the overhead locker contained explosives. Complying with safety regulations the flight attendant decided to inform the captain of the incident. The flight was then cancelled and all of the passengers were evicted, the man who made the ‘joke’ was handed over to investigators.
The passenger, identified as Pichit Boondaeng, told the police that he was simply trying to flirt with the attendant. He has now been charged with spreading false information that caused panic onboard an aircraft. If convicted he faces a maximum fine of Bt20,000 and/or up to five years in jail. Lion Air also plan to sue the man for compensation as his ‘joke’ caused serious commercial damages due to the flight not being able to take off.
