There are many great reasons to love the Pasta House, not least if you are anything like me and hate the parking situation in Chaweng. Located next to Stacked restaurant here parking is made easy, simply park on the lake road close to Chaweng Printing and take the cut through to the main street, its less than two minutes walk.
Another great reason to love the Pasta house in terms of the location is that this is the quieter area of Chaweng but still ideal for a spot of people watching. If you enjoy that kind of thing then taking a seat at the front of the restaurant will put you in the perfect spot to do just that, but only of course if you can take your eyes off the magic going on in the open kitchen that is visible from the entire restaurant. The open kitchen not only gives you a show well worth watching, but fills the restaurant full of the aromas of traditional Italian cooking with the freshest of ingredients.
The Pasta House was opened around a year and a half ago by French born Cyril, a man passionate about good food who possesses considerable talents that have been picked up along his culinary journey that has taken him literally all over the world. Luckily for visitors and residents of Samui his journey has paused to fill our Italian culinary dreams here on the island, and long may it last.
Recently renovated the Pasta House now boasts a contemporary diner style layout with comfortable seating. Here not only can you choose from the chefs own traditional and specialty sauces you can create your own unique dish from a fine list of fresh and organic ingredients. Other than the bolognaise sauce that takes longer in its preparation every single dish is made to order and this happens right in front of your own eyes.
But before getting onto the main dishes let’s whet our appetites with the start menu, however be warned both the starters and main courses are huge so unless you can ‘eat for Italy’ it might be worth sharing starter or not eating for a day before you arrive.
Featuring on the starter menu is Focaccia bread, Ceasar Salad with shrimps or grilled chicken, a Caprese Salad of buffalo mozzarella and tomato layered with classic balsamic dressing, fresh and crisp Calamari, an incredible Goat Cheese Salad of warm cheese on toast with lettuce, crispy bacon, cherry tomatoes and a delicious homemade dressing, a large, fresh Greek Salad full of flavor and the freshest of ingredients and a superb range of Bruschetta including classic, Funghi, Olive Tapenade, Salmon, Speck and Gorgonzola and tasty garlic bread as well as delicious Panini with tomato and mozzarella, smoked chicken, salmon and cream, smoked vegetarian, tuna melt and speck mozzarella!
What I love so very much about Pasta House is the option to build your own dish. This is such a great concept for several reasons, the obvious one being that you get to choose all of your favorite ingredients in one dish, but also it is superb for anybody that has difficult food preferences or special dietary requirements because you can choose exactly what goes into your meal. This also takes the hassle out of explaining to the waiter that you want a certain dish but modified to your own requirements taking out and adding a couple of ingredients which we all know can go disastrously wrong in Samui. It also gives you options in terms of keeping down the calories, going all out and indulging in everything you love and watching the pennies if you need to.
So….onto the choices, first of all you can choose your pasta, spaghetti, linguine, penne, tagliatelle, tortiglioni, ravioli ricotta spinach or beef or gnocchi. Choices of sauce – tomato, cream, tomato and cream, pesto, white wine or creamy pesto. Meat choices – pancetta, chicken breast, chorizo or speck ham. Fish and Seafood – tuna, smoked salmon, prawns, mussels, calamari and clams. Vegetable choices – tomato, olives, spinach, zucchini, asparagus, capers, artichokes, mushrooms, red onions, broccoli, green capsicum and sundried tomato. Cheese – gorgonzola, cheddar, parmesan, smoked cheese or feta and finally herbs and garnish choices include parsley, basil, oregano and parmesan. As you can see is more than enough create a great vegetarian option if you choose.
Even though the ‘build your own dish’ is so popular here if you can’t resist something the chef recommends then try Aglio e olio with roast garlic in extra virgin olive oil with a hint of parsley and parmesan cheese, or perhaps the Rose with fresh tomato sauce with soft cream and fresh basil, cheese lovers can indulge in the Gorgonzola with blue cheese cooked with spinach, asparagus, cherry tomatoes and a white wine and cream sauce. Sea lovers will be impressed by the Vongole with clams, onions, fresh chili cooked in white wine and parsley, the Spicy Tuna , Salmone with smoked salmon, spinach, asparagus, cherry tomatoes and dill cream, the Mariana and of course the Tiger prawns with spinach and garlic pan fried with olive oil, white wine and tomato sauce. Other tempting dishes include Bolognese made with premium beef mince slow cooked with the Chef’s secret herbs and spices in a fresh tomato sauce and the Carbonara with smoked pancetta, free range eggs and Parmesan cheese.
If after all of that you are not bursting at the seams or have a sweet tooth that needs to be satisfied you can choose from Chocolate fondant served with vanilla bourbon ice cream, Traditional Italian Tiramisu, Apple Crumble, Nutella Panini, Banana Split or as few or as many scoops of homemade ice cream as you can handle from a large variety of flavors.
Other than the incredible open kitchen, the superb décor and layout, the amazing choice of fresh ingredients, the ‘build your own dishes’ option and the great location, I was really impressed with the friendly team of staff who attend to your every need without bothering unnecessarily while you dine, the low level enjoyable music that compliments your dining experience rather than dominating it, the restaurant and rest rooms are spotlessly clean and the outstanding value for money.
It is always superb to find a new eatery on Koh Samui and it is even better when you discover one that so effortlessly slides right to the top of your favorites list. The Pasta House, in my opinion could do one thing to improve and that is change its name to Pasta Paradise because for anybody who enjoys pasta you won’t find anywhere serving more impressive dishes.
