The Foreign Minister of Malaysia is reporting that the country will collaborate with China in their research to create a Malaysian Covid-19 vaccine. The minister reported the partnership between China and Malaysia as part of the country’s National Vaccine Development Roadmap.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently announced the country’s roadmap plans to bolster confidence in vaccines amongst the public while positioning Malaysia as a vaccine production hub, not just for Covid-19 but for any future viruses or pandemics that afflict the Southeast Asia region.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah held a shared press conference with his counterpart in China, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where they made headlines discussing keeping the peace in the South China Sea region, but also discussed the vaccine research cooperation plan in which the 2 countries will partner.

“Malaysia welcomes prominent vaccine companies from China to set up their production plants in Malaysia which include data research and R&D [research and development] centres.”

The two officials held the press conference after co-hosting the newly created Malaysia-China High-Level Committee on Cooperation in the post-Covid-19 era that took place in China’s Zhejiang province though officials participated from Malaysia via videolink.
