Joshua Smits, 24, from Berkeley, Wollongong, New South Wales, lept to his death on Monday afternoon, from a second floor balcony of a new hotel in Patong. The incident, witnessed by a maid making up a room at the guesthouse, startled onlookers and he reportedly ran half naked through the street and up the stairs of the guest house before jumping off the balcony. In doing so he suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to Patong hospital. He was later transferred to Vachira Hospital in Phuket City where he died at around midnight. Mr. Smits friends, who had been on vacation with him, and were due to fly home on Friday, could come up with no plausible explanation for his behavior. The department of Foreign Affairs and Trading confirmed the man’s death and Consular officials are now providing his family with assistance. Mr Smits Facebook page has been flooded with tributes from his friends shocked by his death.
