Taking care of your swimming pool in Koh Samui can be a tricky business, however if you have the right team of professionals taking care of it for you, having your own pool can be a completely hassle free experience.
The SamuiTimes caught up with Jean-Pierre Sonnekus of Samui Pools to find out about the swimming pool services that he offers on the island.
Thanks for meeting us today, can we start by asking you how long you have been taking care of pools in Samui and how many you take care of.
The company has been running since April 2011 and we take care of 165 pools in total.
Are those all private pools?
No, not all of them, we take care of multiple pools in large hotels as well as private swimming pools.
We offer a range of services such as regular pool maintenance that can be performed twice a week, once a week or bi-weekly, depending on the size of the pool and how much use it is getting. We obviously clean pools, skim leaves, brush and vacuum. We maintain pumps, filters and fittings, take care of water sanitization by checking the quality of the water and adding the appropriate amount of chemicals to maintain water quality, both at the pool side and with our water testing equipment in the office. We offer comprehensive pool installation services, with construction, equipment installation and electrical installation and we can jet wash your pool on request.
What is your most popular service?
Our most popular of service is our chemical inclusive maintenance package. Our customers enjoy this option because they know exactly what they are paying and are not hit with huge bills for chemicals when they least expect it. Quite a few of our customers have been amazed by the savings they have made by choosing this option. If you have been taking care of the pool yourself or handing the task to ground staff that don’t have a great deal of experience with pools I think often there is a tendency to just keep throwing chemicals into the pool until it is clear, rather than properly analyzing the water and adding what you actually need.
What sizes and types of pools can you take care of?
We can take care of any size pool, currently we looks after small plunge pools and Jacuzzis right up to large pools that hold up to 300,000 liters. We can install and maintain chlorine and salt water pools.
What impresses your customers most about your service?
I think the fact we that work to Western standards is an important aspect of our service. We are not trying to offer the cheapest service but we are very flexible in terms of fitting our services to our customers needs. We offer an emergency call out service that is useful if you suddenly find your pump is not working or there has been a huge storm and you have a lot of rain water and debris in your pool just as you are about to host a party or you have guests arriving to rent your home or villa. Of course we also have our shop that stocks a good range of pool care products. We also have frank discussions with customers regarding the value for money component when it comes to their pools. Often people spend vast amounts of money on their luxurious villas only to try and do “the cheapest possible option” with regards to their pools. What people often only find out later (often too late) is that a swimming pool is not like a motor vehicle. If you are really not satisfied with your vehicle you can take it to a car dealer and trade it in on a new or different vehicle. You cannot do this with a swimming pool, so the key point is to ensure that the equipment and installation is cost-effective and done correctly and that way your pool will provide you with many years of hassle-free pleasure. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
Where is your shop, what do you stock and when are you open?
The shop is near to Big C in Bophut on the ring road. We are open from 8am until 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am until 2pm on Saturdays. We stock pool chemicals, nets, brushes, cleaning equipment, pool testing kits. If you need a pump or a filter we can order those and have them in the shop within two days.
If I need a new pump or a new filter, how do I know which one is right for my pool?
You can leave that to us, we are more than happy to have a look at your pool and determine which is the right one for you. We have had a few cases of pools that have the wrong pumps installed for the size, shape and usage, sometimes there is a tendency to go for the cheaper option on pumps but to be frank with you, in the long term it just ends up costing you money. If a pump is having to work harder than it is designed to, it won’t last and it will need replacing before its time anyway, it is more cost effective to get it right from the offset. We have a strong focus on customer satisfaction and offer a free advisory service that will ensure you are getting the right equipment for your pool and enjoying hassle free maintenance of that pool.
You seem very enthusiastic about pool, what do you love about your job here in Samui?
I love being able to find solutions to the unique challenges of pool maintenance that Thailand’s climate brings. The rain, the humidity and the heat that brings evaporation issues with it. I love to be able to provide a really professional but affordable pool maintenance services that meet the needs and exceed the expectations of my customers. I also enjoy meeting new people and being out and about around the island making sure that the pools I take care of are in pristine condition and look as impressive as they deserve to look. There is nothing more rewarding leaving a property knowing that the pool is looking is best and your customer has a smile on their face! I also enjoy the security my customers that are not on the island feel knowing that while they are not here, or their villa is rented out their pool is in safe hands, it’s a great feeling.
