The Oktoberfest is the world’s largest festival and is held annually in Munich and runs for 16 days from late September until the first week of October and it attracts six million people from around the world every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture that can be traced back to 1810.
Large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed during the festival – in 2007 7millioin liters were served along with traditional food such as Hendl, Schweinebraten, Schweinshaxe, Steckerlfisch, wustl, Brezeln, Knodel, Kasespatzle and Sauekraut.
Only beer conforming to the Reinheitsgebot can be served at the Oktoberfest and this means they must have a minimum of 6% alcohol by volume and have been brewed within the city limits of Munich.
The Oktoberfest came about when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12th 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the wedding festivities that included horse races on the fields in front of the city gates. The fields were named Theresienwiese in honor of the Crown Princess and have kept the name ever since.
The festival was prolonged and moved to September to allow for better weather and today the last day of the festival is the first Sunday in October. In 2006 the Oktoberfest was extended two extra days because the first Tuesday, October 3rd was a national holiday. Over the past 200 years, Oktoberfest was cancelled 24 times due to cholera epidemics and war!
But it certainly won’t be cancelled here in Koh Samui for any reason so why not head on down to Nikki Beach where you will find an endless buffet of Bavarian favorites and a live oompah band and lots of beer.
