Blood donators should be between 17 and 60 years of age. Weigh over 45 kilos and be in good health. Have no history of hepatitis or jaundice, or malaria fever history for over three years. Donors should have no sexually transmitted diseases, infectious diseases, a persistent cough, coughing up bloody, hemophilia, blood-related diseases, asthma, allergy, epilepsy, long term skin diseases, kidney disease, heart problems, thyroid or diabetes. Donors must also not have had considerable weight loss, no record of drug use and females should not be menstruating or be pregnant.
Donors are advised to get a good night sleep before they donate, be sure not to have flu symptoms, not eat fat digestible food before the donation, not drink alcohol for 24 hours prior to donating and should not smoke for one hour before they donate.
You should not give blood if you have had unprotected sex with a male or female prostitute during the last three months, if you or your souse are intravenous drug users or if you have tested positive or HIV
If you do donate, you should rest afterwards, drink the beverage that will be prepared for you, drink a lot of water for 24 hours after donation, take an iron tablet and avoid activities that use up a lot of energy immediately after donating.
