Phuket Airport Domestic Terminal to undergo year-long renovations, travel delays expected

Parts of the Phuket International Airport (PIA) Domestic Terminal will be closed over the next year as renovations are undertaken, officials announced yesterday (Oct 28), and advised travellers to arrive early for their domestic flights.
The announcement was made by the Director of Phuket International Airport Monrudee Gettuphan at a press conference held at Proud Phuket Hotel in Naiyang yesterday at 3:30pm.
Speaking at the meeting, Ms Monrudee said, “Since the new International Terminal at PIA was officially opened on September 16, we now need to renovate the old terminal, which is now our Domestic Terminal, in order to accommodate the increasing number of domestic travellers.
“The renovation project is expected to be completed in 330 days,” she added.
“The remodeling of the old terminal will begin on November 1. This renovation is to improve the public amenities and other systems within the terminal and also to make the area more presentable and create commercial space.”
“The renovation for the old terminal will take place in two phases. The first phase of this project is to close the south side of the domestic terminal for renovation, this includes levels one to three. The second phase is to close level one to three on the north side and to improve all airport systems.
“The renovation of both sections in the old terminal will improve the overall structure, upgrade the architectural design and enhance the engineering integration,” Ms Monrudee explained.
“Beside the passenger terminal renovation, we will also be increasing our security measures. We will set up pedestrian traffic system inside the Domestic Terminal and this will control the direction of foot traffic through the terminal.
She added, “PIA will further advise travellers about the schedule of the renovation of the old terminal after I have met with airline workers, government officials and PIA business operators.
“We have already contacted Airports of Thailand (AOT) to help with publicity and to alert travellers through their website at: airportthai.co.th and on the AOT Facebook page.”
“So far we have put up direction signs for travellers and these signs can be found on the 4031 road route heading to the Domestic Terminal at PIA. Due to stricter security check PIA is advising travellers to arrive at the PIA at least two hours before your flight’s departure. The PIA apologizes for any inconvenience,” she concluded.
