The president of the Phuket Tourism Association says the island is proving popular with foreign tourists, receiving 4,000 applications a day through the Thailand Pass system. Bhummikitti Ruktaengam says most of those visitors are from Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and France. Bhummikitti credits the success of the island’s Covid-19 measures for inspiring confidence among foreign tourists.

The Bangkok Post reports that 70% – 80% of international arrivals who test positive are infected with the Omicron variant, according to Bhummikitti. However, 90% of cases only exhibit mild symptoms and he says they can remain self-isolating in their hotel rooms, provided the properties are SHA Plus accredited.

Bhummikitti says the authorities are also setting up other facilities in the event that hotels do not have isolation rooms for infected guests. These could be hospitels or the newly-created Traveller Community Isolation wards. The island will open 3 new TCI facilities today, to accommodate infected tourists whose hotels do not have isolation rooms.

Meanwhile, 126 out of 480 Phuket hotels have registered to offer hotel room isolation, allocating a number of rooms for self-isolating infected guests with only mild symptoms. The island now has 650 such rooms, according to the Bangkok Post. Bangkok Hospital Siriroj has also agreed to work with a local hotel to offer a further 100 hospitel rooms, according to Bhummikitti.
