Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has issued a directive for the police that, from now on, suspects arrested by the police or the military must not be presented before the media at a press conference as such act amounts to a violation of human rights.

PM against presentation of suspectsThe prime minister’s directive regarding the presentation of suspects before the media which is commonly practised by the police was disclosed by Mr Thawatchai Thaikhieu, deputy permanent secretary for justice, in a message posted in the Facebook page on Saturday.

He said that police could, however, tell the media about their arrests of suspects and/or seizures of illegal items or items used in committing offences without the presence of the suspects.

The prime minister, according to Mr Thawatchai, it would be difficult for the suspects to face the society and also unfair to them if, it was proven later on after their arrests that they did not commit the offences as alleged.
