Police start investigation of CO OP fire in Surat Thani

Police officers have started their investigation of the fire at the Cooperative market in Surat Thani province, that occurred late last night.
Police officers from the Scientific Crime Detection Division 8, is inspecting the site of the fire at the Surat Thani cooperative (CO OP) today, by taking aerial photographs from a crane, due to the inaccessibility of the site because of the roof structure’s collapse and the current fragile condition of the building. The fire has not yet been fully extinguished and continues to burn items that are piled up.
Many people gathered at the site to observe the situation, while the public was not allowed to enter the scene due to concerns for their safety.
The manager of the Surat Thani cooperative Phisan Morpraman says that the damage to the building and merchandise is estimated at 50 million baht, while the cooperative is covered by a 280 million baht insurance policy, with an additional 30 million baht insurance against arson and fire accidents.
The Surat Thani Cooperatives is an important place in the province as it serves as a vehicle rest center, with restaurants, souvenir shops, retail and wholesale markets, with a sales value during festivals of around 2 million baht daily, and an annual sales turnover of approximately 300 million baht.
