Polish woman dead after being run over while trying to cross street in south Phuket

Authorities were alerted to the accident – which happened near the entrance to Soi Thao Daeng Uthit on Wiset Rd, between Chalong and Rawai – at about 10pm on February 13.
There was nothing rescue workers could do to save the victim, named as 44-year-old Ms Malgorzata Regina Szczygiel from Poland, who was found lifeless in a pool of her own blood in the middle of the road, as scores of residents and onlookers passed by.
Also at the scene of the accident there was a black Honda car, and a German man, named as 73-year-old Miroslav Slanina, who told police that he had been driving the car from Chalong circle, unable to slow down in time to avoid hitting the woman, who was crossing the street with her partner, unharmed in the incident.
The German man was detained and charged for reckless driving resulting in death, but by 11pm had posted bail in the amount of B100,000.
