A powerful bomb targeting military vehicles in the Krong Pinang district of Yala province has gone off killing eight soldiers and injuring two others. The roadside bomb is one of the most deadly attacks in recent years. Colonel Pramote Promin told the AFP news agency that the powerful bomb completely destroyed the truck that was carrying ten soldiers. Two villagers were also injured in the attack.

Since 2004 more than five thousand people have been killed when a separatist insurgency reignited in the Muslim-majority. Despite government talks with rebels near daily attacks continue. Muslim militants, who are fighting for greater autonomy, are believed to carry out the gun and bomb attacks against security forces and citizens perceived to be government allies or collaborators in the area.
