On October the 2nd a Russian apprehended on Soi 6 off Pratanak Road on charges of theft and blackmailing in Russia. Andrei Tsirp had been living in Pattaya pretending to be a student on a visa that had run out in September. The man was taken to the local immigration office for questioning where he reportedly offered the police a 700,000 baht bribe. He was then taken into custody while arrangements were being made to transfer him to Bangkok and then deport him back to Russia to face charges of assault and robbery in Russia.

Early in the morning the security guards at the detention centre found Andrei lying unconscious in the cell and called for a doctor, according to the Head of the Consular Section of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Kingdom of Thailand Vladimir Snosnov. The doctors arrived at the scene and concluded that Mr. Tsirp had died of a cardiac arrest and significant digestive disorder. A full investigation into the case is due to be carried out.
