Southern violence – shootouts and bombs as “coordinated attack” leaves Betong in darkness

Violence in the southern Thai provinces of Yala and Narathiwat caused widespread disruption last night but no reports of injuries.
There were two twenty minute shootouts at checkpoints in Narathiwat. At one the attackers spread nails over the road to prevent capture by army rangers.
A container at a mobile phone mast facility was set on fire.
In Yala four roadside bombs brought down 5 power poles that left the town of Betong in darkness.
Trees were also felled across both provinces.
The authorities said the attacks about 9pm were coordinated but they were not yet sure which group was responsible.
There were no reports of injuries, noted Thai Rath in their story.
