Surat Thani opens road safety center to lessen traffic accidents

Surat Thani province has recently opened a road safety center in order to prevent and deal with traffic accidents that may occur during the Songkran festival.
Governor of Surat Thani, Chatpong Chataraput presided over the opening ceremony of the province’s new road safety center. He pointed out that the much anticipated Songkran holiday period would be busy with cars and traffic which render even more road accidents to take place.
The center has designated April 11-17 the week of anti-road accident campaigns in order to reduce the number of crashes and casualties to zero. Statistics showed that during Songkran in 2011-2013 the number of road accidents increased one-fold from the usual rate.
Therefore, Surat Thani’s road safety center will strictly enforce traffic laws to lessen road accidents. The efforts include strict enforcement on speed limit, alcoholic drink control; safe practices for the water splashing tradition, especially on the back of pickup trucks.
