Swiss septuagenarian pulled from the sea at Koh Chang – dead from suspected heart attack

A 77 year old Swiss man was reported floating unconscious in the sea near Chang Cliff Resort on White Sands Beach, Koh Chang yesterday evening.

Rescue services and the military were quickly on the scene. The military managed to haul the man onto some rocks and administer CPR. He was then taken to shore and then transported to hospital on the island. But Walter Eugen Schlafle was pronounced dead at the hospital. Witnesses said he had gone swimming in a calm sea in the late afternoon. Relatives said he was an avid swimmer but they suspect he died from a heart attack. Police have called for an autopsy.
