Taking a selfie in Thailand can land you one year in jail

Despite Thailand’s reputation as a hedonistic playground where many tourists flock to enjoy nightlife and booze, taking a selfie with you and a bottle of beer can land you in jail for up to a year. Posting photos of yourself with alcohol on social media sites could be interpreted as ‘encouraging others to consume booze’ which is forbidden under Thai law since the army seized power in the coup lasts year. The maxim penalty for posting boozy photos is a $14,000 fine and a year in jail, so if you can’t resist showing the world photos of yourself downing beers you would be well advised to rip the label off the bottle.
A warning was recently issued in regards to this matter after dozens of Thai celebs posted photos to their instagram accounts that depicted them holding bottles of Chang beer, the most popular ale in the Kingdom, a phenomenon many say was part of an orchestrated marketing campaign from an alcohol firm, although the stars denied the claims. The authorities say that this warning extends to everybody in Thailand and suggest nobody posts photographs of them drinking alcohol.
