THAI Airways held a religious ceremony yesterday on the occasion of its 56th anniversary.
Thai Airways Second Vice President Areepong Boocha-oom presided over the ceremony, which was also attended by Thai Airways President Jarumporn Chotikasathien, other airline executives and invited guests.
The religious ceremony was first held before a Hindu shrine. Monks were also invited to deliver sermons to people who joined the event to celebrate the airlines’ birthday.
According to the national carrier, it was founded in 1960 as a joint venture between Thailand’s domestic carrier, Thai Airways Company and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). It inaugurated its first flight to Hong Kong on May 1, 1960.
In 1977, the Thai Government bought out SAS’s 15% stake, and Thai Airways became fully owned by the Thai people. Thai Airways now offers flights to 57 destinations in 30 countries around the world with a fleet of 80 planes.
