Thai woman tricked into working abroad hangs herself in police custody in Malaysia

Sanook reported on the sad case of a 26 year old Khon Kaen woman called Thanya or “Pern” who replied to a Facebook advertisement to go and work in South Korea.
She was promised a monthly salary of 70,000 baht and eagerly got on a plane.
But the flight took her to Sibu island in Malaysia instead.
She contacted relatives and help agencies for assistance and in April she was taken in by Malaysian police along with two other women.
Contact with her relatives indicated that she was fine in custody being treated well and eating and on May 10th she was moved to a house with the two others as police continued to investigate the case.
She said she expected to be home in Thailand in two more weeks.
But then contact ceased until last Friday when a Thai consulate in Malaysia contacted the family to say she had committed suicide by hanging herself. They said she had found out that she might be held for three months and was stressed as a result.
Relatives have contacted the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok for help in repatriating the body.
