Thailand and India strengthens relations, plans to work together on trade, tourism

After a break, Thailand and India plan to work together on trade, maritime activity, and tourism. In an interview with the Bangkok Post, India’s ambassador in Thailand said it was important to remember the overlaps between the two countries in culture, language, and religion. Earlier this month, the Indian embassy launched a competition for the best logo promoting bilateral relations between the countries. There will be a ceremony announcing the winners.
Right now, no exact dates are set for visits between Thailand and India, but several meetings and events are planned, the ambassador says. The countries will have high-level meetings after Covid-19 goes under control more. Tourism between Thais and Indians is still important since many Thais visit Buddhist sites in India. The Himalayas are also a popular place for Thais to visit since it gives them the chance to experience snow and skiing, the ambassador says. Even though both Thailand and India are very closed by Covid-19 restrictions now, the ambassador said the Indian embassy is working closely with Thai authorities to bring back tourism between them.
Technical and economic cooperation is also on the way. A recent technical and economic initiative will bring together countries from South and Southeast Asia. The South Asian countries are India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, and the Southeast Asian countries are Thailand and Myanmar. Thailand also signed an MOU with India that will allow Thai students to receive scholarships to Indian universities.
