Thailand gives Malaysians one month to collect stranded vehicles free of charge

Thailand is giving Malaysians one month to collect their stranded vehicles free of charge from June 1 – June 30. Hundreds of cars with Malaysian number plates got stranded in Thailand when the border closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, over two years ago. After June 30, Thailand will impose a fee to collect stranded vehicles.

Vehicles can be brought back to Malaysia via the border checkpoint at the Rantau Panjang Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex, or ICQS, according to Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff…

“I call on all Malaysians whose vehicles are stranded in Thailand to act immediately before the Thai government reimposes the fee after the deadline.”

Siti Zailah said the matter was agreed upon at a meeting with 13 relevant agencies in line with the reopening of the Thai – Malaysian border. She understands the qualms and constraints of Malaysians whose vehicles have been stuck in Thailand for over two years, she added.

In August 2020, Malaysia returned stranded Thai vehicles to Thailand through the Sungai Kolok immigration checkpoint. The “territorial defence volunteers” who delivered the cars had to quarantine for 14 days upon their return to Malaysia.

Two years later, Malaysians will finally get their cars back… If the engines start anyway.
