When Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo lost their final appeal in the High Court last month and had their death penalty sentences upheld for the rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge and the murder of David Miller on Koh Tao in 2014 many members of the international community were still not convinced they are the true culprits of the crimes.

Many onlookers around the globe have shown an interest in this case and the growing controversy it has attracted.
While the men’s lawyers prepare a petition to the King of Thailand to ask for a pardon to have their death sentences commuted to life in prison the international community are signing a petition to ask this Majesty the King to allow a re-trial.

The Change.org petition is heavily based on a report by Human Rights Solicitors who observed the trial and have noted that in part the men did not receive a fair trial.

The main concerns expressed are that the men had no legal representation during their police interrogations, that the excessively long Court sittings damaged their defence and that the 100% match from DNA found inside one of the victims to the men is not scientifically possible.

Within less than 24 hours the petition attracted 6,548 views and was shared 559 times.
