The first ever Green Market in Samui was an outstanding success and offered many healthy alternatives to commercially produced foods and goods.
One product that sold well was Sense Handmade Soap made by Nerina who has the shop next to Jordan’s Bar on Maenam Walking Street. As well as selling the soap and other natural alternatives to commercially produced products such as toothpaste, Nerina offered some printed information that everybody should be aware of.
Many commercial and in fact some handmade soaps are made with animal fat, that comes from cows and pigs. Palm oil is also an ingredient in many soaps, the production of which is affected by many moral issues. The palm oil is used as a cheap filter and makes a hard, long lasting soap bar that has no benefit to your skin whatsoever.
What is also worrying is that most commercial soap bars do not say ‘soap’ on their labels and are often marketed as beauty bars, body bars or moisturizing bars. The reasons they are labeled this way is because they are not soap, and therefore cannot be marketed as such, what they actually are is detergent.
What you are actually washing your body with has pretty much devoid of any of the good stuff that has been replaced with synthetic lathering agents and harsh chemicals. These agents may be cheap and plentiful but they are bad for your skin and they are bad for the planet.
Another concern is that commercial soap manufacturers make it a practice to remove the glycerine that is produced during the soap making process. Glycerine is a highly profitable substance is sold to other companies who use it to make lotions and moisturizers which your skin, now dried out from harsh detergent soap desperately needs.
Most commercially produced bars also contain artificial colours and other dangerous chemicals. What is particularly alarming is that Antibacterial and antimicrobial soaps often contain triclosan that is a toxic chemical that is known to cause cancer.
If you would like to treat your body to some soap that is actually good for your body you can buy it from Nerina’s shop in Maenam or from Tracey and Nature’s Home a few doors down.Stay updated with Samui Times by following us on Facebook.
