Three tonnes of drugs go up in smoke

Authorities in Ayutthaya incinerated 3.36 tonnes of methamphetamines, crystal meth, ecstasy and cocaine at the Bang Pa-In Industrial Estate in a bid to raise awareness on World Drug Day. The event was organized by the Ministry of Public Health. The drugs had all been seized by law enforcement officials in more than 2,500 cases last year. The drugs had a street value of almost 950 million baht. Thailand is certainly making progress in stemming the flow of drugs coming into the country, however their efforts are continually hampered by drug-producing groups in neighboring Myanmar.
According to the Thai Public Health Administration there are still around two million drug users in Thailand, with methamphetamine being the most popular drug of choice.
World Drug Day was established by UNODC in 1987.
