Two foreign tourists – a husband and wife – had a nasty shock yesterday when they found the rotting remains of a monk while visiting a Lamphun cave.

The couple had entered the Thor cave in Mae Tha district about forty meters when they noticed a terrible smell.

On a path by some rocks they found a tightly bound package wrapped in white plastic and cloth. They called the Thakat police.

Rescue services retrieved the corpse of a man that was encased in a mat, bed sheet and monk’s clothing.

The corpse was bald headed and police deduced that he was probably a monk. The body resembled a mummy and had been there for several months.

They are treating the matter as a murder inquiry, reported Daily News.
