Tragic death robs Koh Samui of a much loved resident

In a shocking blow to friends and relatives Michael Schimanek (54) from Linz in Austria drowned of the shores of Koh Samui the morning of 31/12 at Laem Sor Beach while taking his daily swim. Michael had lived in Koh Samui for 15 years and was a well loved and well valued member of the community known and adored for his wonderful sense of humor. Many people took kayak trips with this popular ex-pat to the Five Islands – he was something of a water expert and knew the area at Thong Krut, Taling Ngam and Laem Sor like the back of his hand.
The exact cause of his death is unknown, although a head injury was noted when he was recovered from the water approximately an hour after his death. He was found by his wife who was concerned when he did not return from his morning swim, she found his body floating in the sea close to Laem Sor Beach.
