“Well done everybody!” – northern immigration chief praises staff as another 900+ foreigners arrested

Region 5 Immigration chief Maj-Gen Ponganan Khlaikleung was all smiles yesterday as he went to praise his staff at the immigration offices in Chiang Mai following the latest arrests of foreigners.

He was in town after 932 people were arrested in what has become known as the “pre-coronation crime sweep” that took place nationwide from the 26th to 30th of last month.
The sweep was designed to flush out foreign undesirables causing trouble or potential trouble ahead of the royal coronation ceremonies this long weekend.
It included more than 100 people not reporting their address.
The Maj-Gen gave some hearty “well done” encouragement to his underlings as he inspected work at Chiang Mai immigration office on Thursday.
The results of the crime sweep in the north were as follows:
Total arrested: 932
Illegal entry: 698
Not reporting address: 146
Overstay: 61
Aiding and abetting foreigners: 1
harboring illegal aliens: 4
Other crimes (unspecified): 22.
